A stay or bridle needs replacement as soon as one of the wires breaks. After the first wire break, the other wires will quickly follow; the force is distributed over an increasingly thinner stay and fewer wires. Stay breakage can be (partly) prevented by properly tensioning and ensuring that the side stay is attached without twists.
The side stay is made of high-quality stainless steel with a PVC coating to protect the sail. Together with the forestay line, you control the mast trim with the side stays.
The Dart 18 mast is mounted on a ball and rotates over this mast ball during a course change. This oval-shaped mast contributes to the wing profile of the sail (at a beam reach and close-hauled). In downwind sailing, the mast opens completely to the side of your boat.
After you have positioned the mast forward or backward with the forestay line, the shroud stays are adjusted to the correct length with the help of the side stay tensioner (WS02054) so that the mast can continue to rotate. The correct position is when the mast bracket can rotate slightly beyond the front beam.
If the mast is too loose, it can slide off the mast ball when the boat capsizes. If the mast is too tight, the Dart 18 will not gain speed on close-hauled courses; the sail will not achieve the correct wing profile.
Due to the constant movement of the mast, the washers also move, and there is a chance that they come loose, causing the mast to come down. To prevent this, the washers can be taped; the easiest for this is self-amalgamating tape (TZ2019Z). This tape leaves no adhesive residue when you release the rigging to lower the mast.
